‹ Day 7

Khergiani, the Tiger of Rocks

2-min read

Mikhail Khergiani, born in Mestia in 1932 into a dynasty of Svan mountaineers, became the Soviet Union’s most celebrated climber — a seven-time national champion famous for moving on sheer rock with impossible speed and calm.

After watching him climb in Britain in the 1960s, English climbers gave him the nickname that stuck for life: the Tiger of the Rocks. His family house in Mestia is now the small museum we visit — ice axes, ropes, photographs, and the man’s quiet presence.

🎒 The museum is small and personal — twenty unhurried minutes is exactly right.
