The Green Monastery
2-min read
The 9th-century monastery of St George at Chitakhevi sits alone in deep forest by a rushing stream — everything here, from the mossy basalt walls to the light itself, really is green. It is one of the quietest places on the whole route.
It is a working monastery with a hard history: tradition holds that its monks were massacred during Tamerlane’s invasions, and the reddish stones in the streambed are remembered as stained by their blood.
🎒 It is a living monastery: quiet voices, modest dress, and ask before photographing the monks.
